IMG_8790FINAL-464x250-c55.jpgJust as packing needs a strategy, so too does unpacking. Use our moving schedule to plan ahead. Usually it’s the most frustrating because you’re so close to the finish line, but now you’re daunted with scattered boxes waiting to be loved again but you’re just not mentally or physically prepared to take it all out.

1. Starting Off With A Killer Moving Strategy

When you find out your moving in date plan your move straight away! This is not worth procrastinating, especially when you’re dealing with moving the whole contents of a home. Consider booking a removalist or hire a truck that will fit majority of your stuff, this saves you the headache of making multiple trips with your car and delaying the move – Not worth it!

There are some things we can plan, and unfortunately things we cannot. Weather is one of them. Although we cannot predict it, we can always be ready for it. As the weather is bipolar majority of the time it’s always essential to have your packed boxes sealed with heavy duty masking tape, extra blankets, and ponchos for you (of course!). If boxes end up getting drenched, get them unpacked immediately so that moisture does not harm any appliances or books; assuming you’ve labelled every box with what’s inside.

2. Making The Most Of A Fresh Clean Slate

Tool kit for what you’ll need on the day

  • Cardboard to chuck on the floor to prevent any damage with removalist bringing heavy items in
  • Scissors to open boxes
  • Cloth and favourite spray to wipe as you go
  • Toilet roll (Trust me you’ll thank me later)
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Refreshments on the go
  • Dog bowl for water
  • Your first aid kit (Barocca, beer, bandaids, panadol)
  • And don’t forget to book yourself a massage in advance

Why we encourage the moving process, well because of the benefits of a clean slate. Start off on the right foot by spending a few hours before the move in date to do a big tidy up. It’s always handy moving into a clean home.

  • Get dusting and don’t forget skirting boards
  • Clean out your junk drawer stuff (Also cuts time unpacking)
  • Clean out all the kitchen cupboards and bathrooms
  • Although we don’t recommend worrying too much about the cleanliness of your floors – because they will most likely be messy by the end of the move in.

 3. Phone A Friend

The more hands the better. Try remember the last time you’ve helped a friend with something, and contact them politely to ask for a helpful hand in return. Even bribe them with a delicious free meal – whatever it takes! If this happens be sure to kindly ask them to follow your directions, because really you don’t want misplaced boxes or stuff put away that you won’t be able to find later.

 4. Unpacking Formula

The thing is; don’t work harder, work smarter! There should always be a logical method to unpacking and that is to tackle each room in a certain order. Assuming you’ve labelled your boxes, place them in the room which they will be living in. That way you don’t have a clutter-filled living area of boxes; being a hazard to everyone, and constant going back and forth for specific boxes. If you’ve already got a plan of what room you're going to unpack first, then great! You probably know what works best for your household. Whether you have a plan or not it’s important to consider, which room will I need to start “living” in immediately! I’m sure that your study room can wait, but can your kitchen?

 5. Think About Which Rooms Take Priority

As mentioned, the kitchen is a priority for most. It can also be the most time consuming area to unpack, but having this dealt with at the beginning means you can settle the rest with ease. Take out all crockery, cooking and eating utensils in cupboards that compliment your movement around the kitchen. Get something to eat in the fridge and pantry – with just enough food to get you by for the time being.

Forget about sleeping on a mattress on the floor! The bedroom is a must. Focus on putting the bed frames, mattress and enough blankets to get you by for now. Don’t get too caught on putting all your clothes in the closet just yet. If you have a lot of clothes this can be very time consuming and can distract you from moving in the rest of your home essentials. Get together a couple of outfits and some bare essentials to get you by for the next couple of days.

When you thought of the rooms you’re most likely to use first, it’s time for the finicky stuff. Try your best not to put this off for too long, because even though they are not absolutely essentially right now doesn’t mean you won’t be needing them anytime soon… It’s just best for your own sanity to get everything out of the way so you never have to see an untouched box ever again.

 6. Reuse Boxes

If you’re thinking of dumping the lot, think twice! You never know what great use can come from these boxes – until you throw them away and realise after the fact. Disassemble them and have them put away for your next move or if ever you think you may need storage in the near future because sometimes we need to get a hold on the clutter that often accumulates overtime.
